Enterprise AI agent platforms: comparison and selection guide

How Xagent, Zapier, Make, UiPath and Copilot Studio compare on autonomy, systems access, governance, team skills and cost, and how to pick one to pilot.

Enterprise buyers can choose from several kinds of AI agent platform. Zapier and Make grew from app-to-app automation. UiPath grew from robotic process automation. Copilot Studio builds agents inside Microsoft 365. Xagent starts from a plain-language request that it plans and runs. The right choice depends on your systems, governance needs, team skills and volume.

What changes when automation becomes agents?

The question changes from “how do I connect two apps?” to “how do I let software make decisions safely?”. A fixed workflow does what its builder drew. An agent decides the next step from what it finds, so you need to see what it did, limit what it can touch and stop it when needed.

That makes governance part of the buying decision, not an extra. It also changes cost. Per-task pricing that is cheap for a few simple automations can grow quickly when an agent takes many steps on every run.

What do Zapier, Make, UiPath and Copilot Studio offer?

Each comes from a different starting point, so compare them on the work you have rather than on feature lists.

Zapier and Make

They offer very wide app coverage and a visual builder that business users learn quickly. As of October 2026, Zapier lists more than 9,000 apps, and its pricing is task-based, including AI steps. Its higher plans add single sign-on and admin controls. Zapier also offers Zapier Agents. Make builds automations as scenarios and offers AI agents, as described in its help centre.

Both fit business-led automation of well-defined flows across many SaaS tools. For decision-heavy work, test their agent features on a real workflow rather than relying on the label.

UiPath

UiPath started with software robots that work through user interfaces the way a person would. Its agentic automation platform now combines AI agents, robots and APIs under one orchestration layer. As of October 2026, UiPath says this layer reaches modern APIs, legacy UIs, mainframes and systems that will never have an API.

That makes UiPath a strong choice where critical systems have no API. Organisations that choose it usually have, or hire, a dedicated automation team.

Copilot Studio

Copilot Studio builds agents within Microsoft 365 and the Power Platform. As of October 2026, Microsoft lists more than 1,500 prebuilt data connectors and support for MCP servers. It says you can use default or custom models, or models from Azure AI Foundry. Its documentation describes agent flows that feel similar to Power Automate.

It fits organisations already standardised on Microsoft, where one tenant, one admin centre and existing agreements matter most.

How does Xagent work?

Xagent is an enterprise agent platform by Xinference. You describe a task in plain language. Xagent writes a plan, shown as an execution graph with one card for each step, then runs it with tools. Every tool call and result is visible while it runs, with the token count. A running task can be paused.

A task that works can be saved as an agent with its role, model, tools and knowledge, then run again or scheduled. Native connectors cover Google, Microsoft, Meta and LinkedIn, and other systems, including internal ones, connect through MCP servers. Xagent works with open models and API providers, including any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and can run on models self-hosted through Xinference.

For governance, Xagent keeps run logs and traces, has admin and team workspaces, and supports sign-in with Google. It runs as Xagent cloud, and self-hosting is available on the Enterprise plan.

What should governance cover?

Write down the evidence you need before you compare products. For an agent, that usually means who started each run, which tools it called, what data it read, what it changed and who signed off. Then test whether each shortlisted product captures that on the exact plan you would buy. Do not assume an enterprise label covers it.

Ask the same questions about access. Who can create agents, which connections they can use, and how sign-in works. Check retention and export as well. Our guide to enterprise AI agent governance lists the five controls to put in place before production.

What does it really cost?

List price is only part of the total. Add the people who build and maintain the automations, the model usage, the connectors and the time spent fixing failures when a connected app changes.

Per-task pricing is usually cheapest at low volume. For UiPath and Copilot Studio, pricing depends on your quote or Microsoft agreement, so ask each vendor to price your actual workload. Xagent’s public plans are US$59 a month for Pro and US$299 a month for Team, both with unlimited agents, and Enterprise is priced with sales. See the Xagent pricing page for what each plan includes.

Do not extrapolate an entry-level price to enterprise volume. Run the same workload through each shortlisted option and compare the real bill.

How do team skills affect the choice?

Zapier and Make suit teams comfortable with visual builders. UiPath suits organisations that will fund a dedicated automation team. Copilot Studio suits teams that already work in Power Platform. Xagent suits teams where the people who own the work can describe it clearly, with someone technical setting up models, connectors and access.

A selection rubric:

  1. Legacy systems with no API point to UiPath.
  2. A Microsoft-standardised organisation points to Copilot Studio.
  3. Many simple, fixed flows across SaaS tools point to Zapier or Make.
  4. Decision-heavy work owned by business teams, with a need to choose your own models, points to Xagent.

Expect the evaluation to show gaps in your own readiness too. You may find that no one owns agent governance, that data access rules are not written down, or that compliance needs decisions explained in a way your current tools cannot show. Finding these early is part of the value of the exercise.

Narrow to two or three candidates, then run each on one real workflow for 30 days. Measure the hours spent building and maintaining it, how often a person had to step in and what it cost. Questions

What is an enterprise AI agent platform?

It is software for building, running and governing AI agents that act across business systems. It adds access control, visibility and deployment options to the basic ability to plan and use tools.

Is Zapier an AI agent platform?

Zapier is mainly a workflow automation platform across more than 9,000 apps. As of October 2026 it also offers Zapier Agents.

When is UiPath the right choice?

When critical systems have no API and must be automated through their user interface. UiPath combines robots, agents and APIs for that kind of work.

Can Xagent be self-hosted?

Yes. Self-hosting is available on the Enterprise plan. Xagent can also run on models you host yourself through Xinference.
