n8n is a workflow automation platform. You build each workflow on a visual canvas, add code where needed, and can self-host the free Community edition. Xagent is an enterprise agent platform. You describe a task in plain language. Xagent writes a plan and runs it with tools. Pick n8n to own every step and Xagent to hand over the outcome.
n8n suits technical teams who want to build and own every step. Xagent suits teams who would rather describe the outcome and let agents plan the steps.
n8n details checked on n8n.io and docs.n8n.io, 6 October 2026.
Xagent vs n8n at a glance
| n8n | Xagent | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A platform for “AI agents and workflows you can see and control” (n8n.io) | An enterprise agent platform by Xinference |
| Who builds the workflow | You do, node by node on a visual canvas, with code where needed. n8n Assistant (in preview) can draft one from a chat request (docs) | Xagent does. It writes a plan for each task, shown as an execution graph with one card per step |
| How you start | A blank canvas, a workflow template, or a request to n8n Assistant | A plain-language request, or a template such as support chatbot, inbound leads or inbox manager |
| Where it runs | n8n Cloud, or self-hosted with Docker and other methods. The self-hosted Community edition is free (docs) | Xagent cloud. Self-hosted is available on the Enterprise plan |
| Integrations and MCP | 500+ integrations, custom API calls, and MCP Client and MCP Server Trigger nodes (n8n.io, pricing) | Native connectors for Google, Microsoft, Meta and LinkedIn. Other systems, including internal ones, through MCP servers |
| Models | “Connect any model” (n8n.io) | Open models and API providers, including any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, or models self-hosted through Xinference |
| Pricing model | By monthly workflow executions. Every plan includes unlimited users and workflows (pricing) | By plan, in USD. Pro $59 a month, Team $299 a month, Enterprise contact sales (pricing) |
| Best for | Technical teams who want to build, test and own each workflow | Operations, marketing, sales and support teams who want to describe the work and get a result back |
When should you choose n8n?
Choose n8n when you have people who build automations and want control of every branch. n8n says it is built for “technical teams”. You can write JavaScript or Python anywhere in a workflow. You can also re-run a single step instead of the whole flow (n8n.io).
n8n is also a strong fit when:
- The process is fixed and runs at volume. A workflow you draw and test once suits steps that never change.
- You want to self-host for free. The Community edition includes “almost the complete feature set” (docs). Check the licence first. n8n uses its own Sustainable Use License, which limits use to your internal business purposes or non-commercial use (docs).
- You want a human approval step inside the flow. n8n lists “Human approval for tool calls” on its plans (pricing).
When should you choose Xagent?
Choose Xagent when the people who own the work are not the people who build automations. You state the outcome in plain language and Xagent writes the plan, with no diagram to draw first. The walk-through of one real task shows what that looks like.
Xagent fits when:
- You want to see the work as it happens. Every tool call and result is visible while a task runs, with the token count, and you can pause a running task.
- The work repeats. Save a task as an agent that keeps its role, model, tools and knowledge. Run it again, schedule it, or start it from a webhook or a new Gmail message.
- Answers must come from your own documents. Agents search your uploaded files with hybrid (keyword plus semantic) search.
- You want a head start. Five specialist roles ship in every workspace: support, growth, planner, knowledge and studio. Building your first agent from a template covers the steps.
- You want agents inside your own product, through the API, a chat widget or the SDK.

Can Xagent and n8n work together?
Yes. Keep fixed, high-volume pipelines in n8n. Give the open-ended tasks, such as triaging an inbox or researching a lead, to Xagent agents.
n8n’s MCP Server Trigger node makes n8n workflows available to MCP clients (docs). Xagent connects other systems through MCP servers, so an agent can call a workflow you have already tested in n8n. In the other direction, an n8n workflow can start an Xagent agent through a webhook trigger or the API. Our guide to connecting your systems through MCP has the details.
What are the best n8n alternatives?
The best n8n alternative depends on why you are leaving.
- You want less building. Look at agent platforms where you describe the task instead of drawing it. Xagent is one.
- You want a hosted workflow builder with more ready-made app connections. Zapier says it works across “9,000+ apps” (zapier.com, checked 6 October 2026).
- You need an open source licence. n8n says plainly that its licence is not open source (docs). Activepieces describes itself as “Open source at the core” (activepieces.com, checked 6 October 2026).

Questions
Is Xagent a no-code n8n alternative?
Yes, for teams who would rather not build workflows. You describe a task in plain language, and Xagent writes the plan and runs it with tools.
Can I self-host Xagent like n8n?
Yes, on the Enterprise plan. The Pro and Team plans run on Xagent cloud.
Is n8n open source?
No, by n8n’s own description. It is source-available under the Sustainable Use License, which n8n calls fair-code (docs).
How is pricing different?
n8n charges by monthly workflow executions (pricing). Xagent plans set users, actions and triggers, and AI credits per month, from $59 a month for Pro.
Try Xagent. See all use cases, or book a demo on your own workflow.
